Immunizations

There are many efforts underway right now to develop vaccines that prevent COVID-19, and we eagerly await the day when a safe and effective vaccine becomes available. We understand that vaccines save lives. Today, vaccines avoid a host of diseases like measles, mumps, rubella, influenza, and polio that 100 years ago contributed to much higher childhood mortality rates.
“Herd immunity” is a concept that describes achieving a certain percentage of immunity within a population through vaccination rates or (in some cases, both) individuals acquiring antibodies by having the illness. For most diseases, vaccinating 95% of the population means that a virus cannot find enough hosts, and new cases will mostly die out. However, once vaccination rates fall to 90% and below, an infection can quickly get a foothold and spread.

Terros Health strongly recommends staying up-to-date with your vaccines.

Since the March declaration of a national emergency to cope with COVID-19, vaccination rates for these diseases have dropped significantly.

Stay-at-home orders and school closures, while necessary for public safety, were accompanied by a decrease in doctor visits, loss of health insurance, and other disruptions of the healthcare system that likely contributed to this decline.

The federal Centers for Disease Control has issued a warning that childhood vaccinations have dropped by 50 percent nationwide. This is especially concerning because it opens the door to a surge in diseases already proven dangerous to children.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month.

More than ever, it is essential to be current on our vaccine schedules to help protect ourselves, our patients, our children, elderly, and immunocompromised family and friends. We are entering flu season this fall with the additional concerns posed by COVID-19 spread. I urge you to get your annual flu vaccine as soon as possible and help your family members do the same. Together, we can help mitigate the spread of preventable diseases.
