Families in Recovery Succeeding Together

Also known as Arizona Families FIRST, is a program with Terros Health to help families involved with the Department of Child Safety (DCS) who are experiencing substance use. This specialized service partners with DCS to help parents as they go through the addiction recovery process. Parents who complete this program achieved reunification with their children nearly 80% of the time versus those who didn’t complete the program.

We now provide support services by our certified Doula Coaches

 

Expecting parents enrolled in our Arizona Families FIRST program can now request a Doula. A Doula is a trained companion who supports another individual through a significant health-related experience, such as childbirth. A Doula may also provide support to the client’s partner, family, and friends. The doula’s goal, and role, is to help the client feel safe and comfortable, complementing the role of the healthcare professionals who provide the client’s medical care. Our certified doulas at Terros Health have lived experience in recovery and as parents and graduates of the Families FIRST program.

Getting Started

A referral from DCS is required to enroll into this program. Once Terros Health receives the referral, an outreach specialist will reach out to you within one day to schedule your assessment.

Your Assessment

Once you accept our services, you will complete a comprehensive substance use assessment within seven days. Upon completion, we will work with you to create your treatment plan. Our integrated care approach is designed to customize the level of care and services added to best meet your needs.

Moving Forward

Your first treatment should occur within 14 days following your referral. Your support team will be there to help you throughout your recovery process.

Treatment Planning

Examples of services that may be included in your plan are: Group and individual counseling, care coordination, drug and alcohol testing, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to do first?

In order to get started, you must have a referral from the Department of Child Safety (DCS). Once the referral has been received, the Outreach Department will contact you within 24 hours. If you have not received a call within 24 hours, please call the Outreach Specialist team at 602-685-6058 (Phoenix) or 520-320-0800 (Tucson) and we will help you schedule an appointment for your one-and-a-half-hour substance use assessment. You will meet with a clinician to discuss how DCS became involved with your family, how substance use has affected your family life, and concerns you may have. Along with your input, the clinician will determine what level of treatment fits your needs.

What’s expected of me next?

You will have the opportunity to attend a combination of group, individual, and family counseling. Talk with your Arizona Families FIRST Outreach Specialist to participate in services until your scheduled appointment. This is an important part of your recovery process.

How long is this program?

The length and frequency of your treatment program will depend on your needs and the achievement of your goals. The program gives you the chance to have honest conversations with others going through similar challenges in a non-judgmental setting. You will be encouraged and supported to make positive changes.
Throughout your time in the program, you will be able to participate in drug screens. This is one of the best ways to demonstrate to your DCS case worker you are making the changes needed to reunify with your child(ren).

I'm pregnant, how do I request a Doula coach?

Our Doulas provide the following services:

• Home visits & support calls
• Follow up after doctor appointments
• Attend labor & delivery
• Follow up after labor & delivery
• Coordination of care with medical providers and recovery treatment team

• Provide resources and information to ease the expecting mother’s anxiety or discomfort

If I do all of this, will I get my kid(s) back?

Your DCS case will be reviewed to determine when it’s safe for reunification. We are here to help you and give you the tools needed for reunification. By engaging in the recommended services, you will have the best chance to reunify with your family as quickly as possible.

What if I need help with transportation, will I get a cab ride?

Transportation can be provided on a limited, short-term basis to assist you in attending your services. We can also provide daily or monthly bus passes, once your eligibility is determined.

Do I pay for the services?

Your treatment services are covered by either your AHCCCS health plan, if you have one, or by the Department of Child Safety. You will not have to pay for any services out of pocket for Arizona Families FIRST.

What if I don’t have healthcare?

Terros Health may be able to assist you with your health care needs and goals. We offer primary care services at several of our locations in Maricopa County.
