HIV Prevention

Living a healthy life with HIV

We began December with World AIDS Day and this month, we want to focus on improving the understanding of HIV, risk factors, and the resources available.
HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that attacks cells which usually help the body fight infection. This makes a person more vulnerable to other infections and diseases. HIV is spread by contact with certain bodily fluids of a person with HIV, most commonly during unprotected sex, or through sharing injection drug equipment. If left untreated, HIV can lead to the disease AIDS, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection that occurs when the body’s immune system is badly damaged because of the virus.
Advances in HIV prevention, care, and treatment offer hope for a long, healthy life to people who are living with, or at risk for, HIV and AIDS. By taking HIV medicine, called antiretroviral therapy or ART, people with HIV can stop the progression of the disease, living long and healthy lives, and prevent transmitting HIV to their sexual partners.

The human body cannot get rid of HIV
and no effective HIV cure exists.
Once an individual has HIV, they have it for life.

There are also effective methods to prevent getting HIV through sex or drug use.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or commonly referred to as PrEP is a specific medicine that helps prevent contracting HIV from sex and from injection drug use. When used correctly and taken for the prescribed amount of time, PrEP medicine can be 99% effective!

Have you talked with your medical provider about possible risk factors for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections? If you, a loved one or family member need more information, we can help. We understand this can be a very private topic for some, and our staff our knowledgeable, professional and welcoming.
