Healthy Weight
and BMI

We now live in an age of a pandemic. With COVID-19 at the forefront of every measure we take to protect our health, wearing masks, physical distancing, and handwashing, there is still more that can be done by focusing on living a healthy life.
We see new information emerging daily about COVID-19 and related health complications. One risk factor for COVID-19 complications is obesity. Obesity or overweight is defined as a weight that is higher than what is considered healthy for a given height. Body Mass Index, or BMI, is used as a screening tool for overweight or obesity. It is important to note that BMI can be used as a screening tool at an individual level but is not diagnostic of the body fatness or the health of an individual. A trained healthcare provider should perform appropriate health assessments to evaluate an individual’s health status and risks.

Body mass index is a value derived from the mass
and height of a person.

People who have obesity, compared to those with a normal or healthy weight, are at increased risk for many severe diseases and health conditions, including the following:

• All-causes of death (mortality)
• High blood pressure (Hypertension)
• High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia)
• Type 2 diabetes
• Coronary heart disease
• Stroke
• Gallbladder disease
• Osteoarthritis (a breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint)
• Sleep apnea and breathing problems
• Many types of cancer
• Mental illness such as clinical depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric disorders
• Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning

The good news is that we can take action now to help protect ourselves from this risk factor.

The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is not about short-term dietary changes. It is about a lifestyle that includes healthy eating, regular physical activity, and balancing the calories you consume with the calories your body uses.

Staying in control of your weight contributes to good health now and as you age.

We help our patients by having open and supportive conversations about healthy weight, developing treatment plans, providing mental health support, and resources, including nutrition consults and other lifestyle planning options.  Let’s do everything possible to help  ourselves be healthy during the time of COVID-19 and beyond.
