Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a pill taken daily to help prevent HIV infection for those who are most at risk. PrEP may be right for you if you are HIV negative and you have a partner who is HIV positive, have multiple partners, or inject drugs.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) can be transmitted through semen, breastmilk, vaginal fluids, anal mucus, and blood. The virus is typically spread through having unprotected sex. HIV is not transmitted through ordinary contact, air, water, saliva, sweat, tears, toilets, food, or drinks.
How HIV affects the body
HIV weakens your immune system overtime by destroying cells that fight disease and infection. There is currently no cure for HIV, but it can be controlled with proper treatment. Without treatment HIV can lead to AIDS. Learn more about HIV/AIDS.

How does PrEP protect against HIV?
When taken correctly, PrEP is about 99% effective. PrEP is very safe and side effects typically get better with time. The most common side effects are headache, nausea, weight loss/gain and vomiting. It is important to come in every 3 months while on PrEP to get tested for HIV and to check on any side effects. There are two PrEP medications currently approved by the FDA, Truvada and Discovy.

Understanding the Difference Between PrEP and PEP.
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is a HIV prevention method that can be taken up to 72 hours after an exposure. This medication is meant for emergency purposes and not for regular use.
Paying for PrEP – There are ways to cover the cost!
If you need financial assistance, Gilead (the company that makes PrEP) has an Advancing Access Program that can help with copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. If you have no insurance, Gilead’s program may make PrEP free, depending on your income. Terros Health staff can help you learn more about coverage options.
