Cervical Cancer Awareness

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

Cervical cancer has a usual early onset, and the CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends screening as early as age 21. There are two tests to help prevent cervical cancer or find it early:
  • The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, which are cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately.

  • The human papillomavirus (HPV) test looks for the virus that can cause these cell changes. Cervical cancer is highly associated with HPV. Even though this silent and deadly virus is most often associated with cervical cancer in women, HPV is known to affect men as well.

There is a vaccine to prevent HPV infections,
which is a risk factor for cervical cancer.

Prevention is key to monitoring and catching cervical cancer early.

Terros Health recommends HPV vaccination and secondary screening measures to detect early pre-cancerous cells through PAP smears and regular medical follow-up appointments.

Cervical cancer carries significant emotional and social effects. These usually include dealing with very difficult emotions, such as sadness, anxiety, or anger that can lead to clinical depression.

Terros Health offers the support of whole health care.

We support our patients in getting screenings and in managing health and well-being, physically and mentally, with any challenging diagnosis.
Early detection is key, and all women between the ages of 21 and 65 years old should get screened for cervical cancer. Please speak with your medical provider about which screening is best for you…and, as always, take care of your whole health!
