Cervical Health Awareness Month

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month.

During January we want to raise awareness about HPV vaccination and how to prevent cervical cancer by encouraging patients to come in for their routine exam. HPV (human papillomavirus) is a common infection that spreads through sexual activity, and causes almost all cases of cervical cancer.

Over 80 million people in the U.S. currently have HPV. Many individuals with HPV don’t know they are infected. And each year, more than 13,000 Americans get cervical cancer.

Beginning at age 21, patients should receive a pap screening every year. Patients over 30 should receive both a pap test and HPV test regularly. Most insurance plans cover cervical health screenings, so all preventative care should come at no additional cost to patients. This makes it even easier to prevent cervical cancer.

The HPV Vaccine

At Terros Health, we recommend that children receive the HPV vaccine beginning at age 11, but in some cases as early as 9 years old. Receiving the vaccine at such an early age ensures a better and stronger immune response. Usually, only 2 doses are necessary for children under age 15. Individuals can receive the vaccine through age 45.

Terros Health offers the support of whole person care.

We support our patients in getting screenings and in managing health and well-being, physically and mentally, with any challenging diagnosis.

Early detection is key, and patients between the ages of 21 and 65 years old should get screened for cervical cancer. Please speak with our medical providers about which screening is best for you…and, as always, take care of your whole health!
